About Us

Willow Crest farm

Al & Susan Bulgawicz
Our desire is to breed very correct miniature horses that can compete nationally in both halter and performance classes. It is our belief that beauty is more than just the standing outward appearance. We feel strongly that intellect, way of going, athletic ability and temperament are equally important. We strive to produce “More Than Just Another Pretty Face”.

Everyone wants to know how we “got into miniatures”. I guess it was at the 1993 Houston Live Stock Show. I said I wanted to go watch the little miniatures and Al said he wanted to look at more important things, like trucks and tractors and farm stuff. He should never have let me watch the minis – and certainly not by myself! Four hours later, I knew I had to know more.

We visited several local breeders, asked hundreds of questions, and took lots of video. We laid out a plan to buy three good quality mares, hopefully all bred to well known stallions. Then I saw a young stallion that stole my heart. He was blue – yes, BLUE! I had never seen a blue roan before. The plan was put on hold as Lazy H Dark Storm’s Blue Indigo, “Indy”, became our first purchase.

We did not have a trailer, much less a place to keep Indy. But Dusty Hartzog’s Rocking EK Training Center in Waller, Texas was not too far away, and for the next three years, Indy and the rest of our growing herd called the Rocking EK home. Dusty and her family provided information, guidance, great equine care, and lots of encouragement for our emerging business. By the time our barn was finally built, the herd numbered seven.
